We have heard that Guinea Hens are good for tick control. Do you have any knowledge of this? Also, can they be left out to roost in trees if coyotes, etc. are possilbe? We have a place in Kentucky and are not alwsya there to keep track of fowl. First Sw you ariticle in Mary Jane Magazine, then went to your site, and loved reading about your adventures.

Hi Debbie!

Thanks for coming to check us out! We actually owned Guinea Hens all last year. They are pretty good at tick control, however we still had ticks even with 5 of them roaming the property and 2 dozen chickens. They also make decent watch dogs as they tend to squawk at any and everything. The problem with that is they squawk so much that we soon began to ignore them and then missed when there was an actual alarm.

They do roost in trees, but we gave them access to the hen house, which is where they would sleep. None ever got taken out by the coyotes in the area. While there were many pluses to having them, we eventually got rid of them because their noise was too much to handle (my husband works from home and couldn’t take the constant screeching) and they would gang up on our chickens. We’re pretty sure that they even killed one.

I would say that if you would like to control the tick population at your home, you can try them, but they do need some attending to.

Hopefully I’ll have the blog posts from last year put up so that you can read about the Guinea Hens soon. Thanks again for taking the time to read and share with us!
